In Lord of the Rings Gollum gamers will play as the character’s original hobbit form Sméagol at first, and then his more familiar counterpart Gollum as he becomes corrupted by the One Ring. The character’s dual nature is said to become a gameplay element – players will have to choose whether to side with Sméagol or Gollum at various points throughout the game.
Gollum, originally known as Sméagol or Trahald, was at first a Stoor, one of the three early Hobbit-types. The name Gollum was derived from the sound of his disgusting gurgling, choking cough. He was born c. TA 2430. His life was extended far beyond its natural limits by the effects of possessing the One Ring.
